Wow, does time fly!  Looking back at this most recent set of pics makes me realize that life with two kids goes by way, way fast!  I feel like I am busy every second of the day, which makes the hours go quite quickly- hard to believe that today Nate is seven weeks already!!

Life with these two is never dull!  Ethan continues to adore his baby brother, and showers him with affection!  I'm so happy to see that he is still as happy as he used to be.  I think every mom has mixed emotions when adding a new member to the family.  I was so worried that Ethan would be unhappy, or feel somehow less loved, or just be saddened that he was missing some of the one on one attention that he was used to. I should have known that my little star would come through though- he is amazing!  As with everything, he happily rolls along with life's changes and is the happiest, most excited kiddo!

As much as Ethan has amazed me with his pure love for his brother and willingness to accept that life is a bit different now, he has still managed to make his own "fun" when I have my hands tied up with caring for Nate.  We have a learning tower in our kitchen- it's basically a wood structure that allows him to safely stand up at the counters to help me cook, wash dishes, etc.  The other day, I was upstairs showering, and suddenly Ethan burst through the door with a mouth full of candy!  He quickly admitted that he had pushed the tower over to the counter, and climbed up to help himself to some Easter candy in the "candy cabinet."  As sneaky as he is, at least he is willing to give himself up pretty easily.  The other place that he likes to find trouble is in the food pantry.  He'll close himself in the little closet and peruse the snacks- inevitably, when I hear the crinkling of wrappers behind the door, I know that he's sneakily snacking!

A huge reason that Ethan has adjusted so well, is because we've had a lot of great help!  I think that I mentioned that Pete is working in CT during the week.  I've been lucky enough to have the great help of my parents, Pete's parents, and my sister.  Without having these guys around to help and support me and the kids, I think I would be telling a very different story about our "smooth" adjustment.  Ethan adores the adults in his life, and so is thrilled whenever a new playmate walks through the door!

Nate is seven weeks today and has been a great baby!  He sleeps well.  He is still up to eat about every 3 hours at night, but once his belly is full, I can lay he right down and he goes to sleep until he's hungry again.  During the day, he is content to be held, but is also okay with hanging out under his mobile, or swinging in his swing.  He is beginning to smile more and more, which is about the cutest thing.  And over the past few days, he has begun cooing more and more.

It's very interesting having a baby the second time around.  I think that with Ethan, I was just content with the baby that he was.  Sure, I would wonder every now and again what he would be like, but I didn't give it too much thought.  With Nate, I find that when I look at him and interact with him, I think, "who are you?"  and "what are you going to be like?"  I guess that comes from observing the personality development of Ethan.  I just adore who Ethan has become.  He is my little buddy and makes me smile all the time with his antics.  I'm not rushing Nate out of babyhood by any means, but I can't wait to get to know the little person that he will be!

So all in all, 7 weeks in, and I have kept my sanity.  There certainly have been moments where I thought I might lose my mind due to sleep deprivation, and a VERY active 2 year old, but with the help of my family, we're coming through just fine.  I'm so lucky to have these two amazingly special little boys in my life, and so, when things get a little rocky, I just breathe and remember how fortunate I am!

This holiday stuff is hard work!
Pete and I are so proud to welcome Nate Robert!  He arrived on March 28th at 8:25 p.m.  He weighed 8 lbs. and was 20 1/2 inches long.  He has been a joy already!  He seems to be an easy going little guy and is pretty content as long as he has a full belly!  Ethan has adjusted better than we could have ever imagined.  He has shown no signs of jealousy or anger.  He adores baby Nate and always wants to be near him, hugging him, kissing him, or holding his hand.  In fact, when we first brought him home, if anyone other than me was holding Nate, he would ask them to give him back to me.  Hopefully this trend will continue, but so far so good.  I knew that it would be a special thing to watch my two sons interact, but I never imagined how much it would fill my heart- it is the most amazing thing to witness the immediate love that Ethan has for his little brother.  And it doesn't just go one way- we notice that whenever Ethan comes into the room, Nate's eyes light up and he looks all around to see Ethan!  All in all, the transition (thus far) has been a very pleasant one!

We celebrated Easter at home this year.  Ethan had a blast attending various egg hunts.  We had my brothers and their families over along with my parents.  All week leading up to Easter, Ethan kept asking if we could have a big Easter party and I guess we delivered.  He had a great time playing with his cousins and hunting for eggs around the house and in the yard.  All in all, it's been a great week-and-a-half!!

It's been way too long since I wrote and added pics! We've had a crazy winter splitting our time between Connecticut and Maine.  Pete has taken a job in Connecticut which has meant lots of traveling and time apart for us.  To say it's been a challenge would be a huge understatement, but through all of the upheaval and stress, Ethan continues to be one of the happiest little people I know!  He has an amazing ability to just go with the flow, and is happy to be in whatever setting he happens to be in- as long as there are cars, trucks and fun people to play with!

Now that we are coming to the end of March, Pete is home and we are waiting for the arrival of Baby Nate.  I can't wait to meet this new little guy.  I'm so looking forward to seeing Ethan meet his little brother for the first time.  I think that he is going to be an amazing big brother.  He is such a gentle, empathetic kid, and I can't wait to see the relationship between the boys grow.

So for now, we are playing the waiting game and just getting ready to meet our newest guy.  We will keep everyone posted, and I promise to be a better blogger (I'll have so much down time with a new baby, right?!!)

11 Things (because I couldn't stop at 10) That I Love about My Nearly Two and a Half Year Old

1.  I love that Ethan wraps his arms around me and says, "You know Mama, I really love you."
2.  I love that if I say, "Ouch" that Ethan says, "oh Mama, let me kiss it and make it better" and proceeds to give me a big kiss.
3.  I love that he is beginning to have a sense of wrong and right and that you should stick up for what's right.  The other day at story time, an older kid pushed a baby over (the baby happened to be Ethan's friend) and Ethan looked right at that big kid and said, "It's NOT nice to push people!"
4.  I love that Ethan is becoming more than just my son,  he is now my little buddy.  The other day we were sitting at the Children's Museum having a snack and we were actually having a real conversation.  He offered to share his favorite museum snack (Pirate's Booty) with me.  Just the way that he offered made him sound so grown up!
5.  I love that Ethan talks about baby Nate in such a kind, sweet way and I don't even have to prompt him.  It's as though this baby is already part of his every day life.  He thinks about him a lot- what he will like, what he will want to do.  And I love that when he asks to "see" baby Nate, he lifts of my shirt and snuggles his cheek to my belly and gives Nate gentle little kisses.
6.  I love that Ethan has a great sense of humor and always makes me laugh.
7.  I love that the simplest things, like getting an ice cream cone at Stew Leonard's and watching the train go around the store causes Ethan to do a happy dance.
8.  I love that I am lucky enough to get to spend my days with this little guy, and experience every minute of his ups and downs.
9.  I love that when we wake up in the morning, he doesn't want to get up- he just wants to lay in bed and snuggle.
10.  I love that lately, if I can't find Ethan, and I creep up to his room, I'll discover him in bed, reading books quietly to himself or arranging his special blocks on his windowsill.11.  I love watching Ethan adore the people around him.  He is so excited to play with his grandparents, cousins, Aunts, and Uncles- he calls them all his friends, and if you are very lucky, he might even tell you that you are his best friend!

The Polar Express!

Ethan LOVES his advent calendar- it's the very first thing he asks for the second he opens his eyes in the morning- he's going to be sad when he finds out we don't eat chocolate treats every morning year round!

Ethan receives his very own Christmas card in the mail- thanks Grandma and Papa!

This is Ethan's idea of "helping" me decorate the cookies...

Ethan checks out the Christmas tree while we wait for our Polar Express train to roll into the station

Ethan boards the small play train

Checking out the bell

The Polar Express arrives and we all board the train!

Hot chocolate, cookies, train rides, and Santa... no wonder he's smiling!

Ethan gets crazy and starts dancing on the benches!

Santa!! Ethan couldn't stop talking about meeting Santa, and telling him what he would like for Christmas. I think seeing the big guy in real life was a little too much for him--he looked like he wanted to hide under the train bench!

After a successful ride, Daddy and Ethan check out the front of the steam train!
The holidays are so much fun when you are experiencing them through the eyes of a two year old!  We have had so much fun this month observing Ethan as he discovers the magic of the holiday season.  We've also had our share of laughs, scares and frustrations, but I'll get to those later!

As you can see from the pictures, we took Ethan on the Polar Express Train.  He had a blast (and so did Pete and I!!)  When we got on the train, Ethan was a bit anxious and kept telling us he wanted to get off, and that he didn't want the train to go.  I'm sure the people all around us were worried that they had gotten stuck in the train car with the one kid who was going to scream and cry throughout the entire trip, and to be quite honest, I was a little worried too!  But once the train got moving, the music started playing, and the chefs came aboard with hot chocolate and cookies, Ethan was sold on the whole train thing!  Toward the end, he even started dancing up and down the aisle with the chefs and other kids.  We had a wonderful time!

Despite being adorable, Ethan has definitely been acting his age!  He is testing, testing, testing all the time, it seems!  And he's got a new habit of grabbing something he knows that he shouldn't have and dashing into a small corner because he knows that we huge adults can't get to him!  We were at my brother's house last weekend for a Christmas party.  We were all downstairs, hanging out, enjoying dessert.  I glanced around the room, and realized that I didn't see Ethan.  Pete and I started looking everywhere for him, calling his name... nothing.  My brother mentioned that they were toasting smores outside earlier in the day by a campfire that he had built in the backyard, and that Ethan had been very intrigued by the fire.  Now panic had fully set in, as we wondered if Ethan had managed to open the door to go outside and see the fire again. Soon, everyone at the party was calling Ethan's name inside the house, and more frighteningly, outside the house!  Suddenly, I heard my brother Ken yell, "I found him!"  He said that he looked down and Ethan was standing right next to him--inside, where we had all begun our search.  Turns out that throughout the day, Ethan had been grabbing candy canes from the dessert table and dashing to various hiding places throughout the house.  While everyone frantically searched for Ethan, he was sitting under a desk that had a wood panel in the front (so there was no way at all to see him), noshing on his secret stash of candy canes!  Later, we found the remains of another candy cane and a sippy cup stashed behind the television.  An amusing story, once we located him, but boy was I scared for a minute!

With the wonder of the Christmas tree, apparently comes the danger of glass ornaments!  Our first year in our house, when Barley was a pup, he thought the glass ornaments were all tennis balls. He would grab them off of the tree, inevitably chomping down on them, which would result in a bloody mouth--good times.  Luckily, Barley has outgrown this ball grabbing habit and would much rather drink the water from the tree stand.  The other day, I was doing laundry and noticed a strange sound.  I walked in to find Ethan sitting behind the tree, crushing glass ornaments with his bare hands.  Needless to say, another wave of panic washed over me, but after thorough inspection, Ethan didn't have a single scratch on him.  We had a loooong talk about the ornaments on the tree and that they are meant to be looked out, and not, ah, well, squeezed!   I'm not sure why I thought having an infant was challenging--age 2 is definitely giving me a run for my money!

Overall, despite the few "teaching moments" we've had with Ethan over the past month, enjoying the magic of the holiday with a little guy doesn't get much better.  Ethan is so excited about every aspect of this Christmas business--he loves the shows, songs, decorations, stories--all of it.  The other day, I was putting Ethan down for bed, and he looked up at me and said, "Mama, what is Santa bringing for baby Nate (this is the name that is currently #1 in the running) and so we discussed what sort of things a baby would like from Santa.  We decided that a baby would probably like a nuk or a toy.  The next night, we had a very similar discussion, but this time, Ethan was concerned about what Santa would bring for Barley.  We decided that a bone would be a good gift, but then Ethan brought up his concerns about how Barley would open a present since he didn't have hands.  Ethan decided that he would help Barley, even though we learned that Barley was able to open presents with his paws and mouth.  I love having these conversations with Ethan--it gives me a tiny glimmer into what goes on in that little head of his.  And I'm so proud that even though he could be thinking solely of what he wants for Christmas, he's got enough concern for his other family members to make sure that they will be taken care of, too--what an amazing little two year old I have... even if he does eat hairy candy canes in dark corners at Christmas parties!!
