Our little Nate is two!  So hard to imagine that our baby is such a little boy now!  We had a great time celebrating his birthday with friends and family at our new house.  It was really fun hosting our first "event" here.  I'd like to think that it was a success!  I know for sure that Nate had a good time!

Uncle Keith visits from MN
I remember way back when, when this was a weekly blog.  I would sit down while Ethan was napping and blog every Thursday morning.  My how the times have changed!  We're still doing so many fun things, and the kids are still completely amazing.  There's just no time to sit and reflect on it!

Nate will be two in two weeks.  This is so crazy!  He has blossomed into a little boy right before my eyes.  In the past few weeks, he has begun to put words together to form short sentences and thoughts.  I absolutely love being to able to hear what he has to say.  If I wipe his nose, he'll say, "Mama, hurt nose"  and he has started naming things that he thinks are good, and yucky.  Last night, we were eating pizza, and he looked over at me and said, "delicious pizza, Mama"  It took him a bit of time to get the words out, but he's putting it all together now,  I love hearing what he has to say.  This morning he asked to try pancakes and told me the exact fork he wanted to use. "fork, choo choo."  It's not only adorable, but I imagine a relief for him to be able to communicate with us.  Can't remember if I mentioned it previously, but Nate and I are doing a Music Together class that meets weekly at a local church.  He really likes going and has taken to the class routines really quickly.  When it's time to put away the instruments he goes around the room and collects them from the other kids and brings them to the teacher.  And at the end of class, when the teacher turns off the lights, he immediately lies down on the floor and snores as it is "calming down time"  Really amazing to watch him grow and to see how uniquely different Ethan and Nate are from one another.

Ethan is doing really well.  He has a new interest/obsession.  He started watching a show called Octonauts.  It's all about sea creatures.  He is completely into everything ocean, sea creature, water, and can spit out the most random facts about the topic.  It's been so much fun!  We've visited some local aquariums and it's been so cool to see all of the animals that we've read about and seen on TV.  We've hit the non-fiction section of the library pretty hard- we leave weekly with books about Moray Eels, sharks, whales, and so on.  I'm thrilled to have moved onto a topic that doesn't involve trucks! This morning, I brought Ethan to the dentist.  He looked like such a big kid, sitting in the chair on his own.  The hygenist was writing notes, and Ethan said to her in a little voice, "You know, I'm a kid who is really into sea creatures" and they proceeded to have a very mature, engaging conversation about sea life.  The kids cracks me up on an hourly basis, but to watch him interact with strangers in such a mature way, blows my mind.  He's huge!

Pete has been in Russia for the past 3 and a half weeks, and I'm counting down the days until he returns (3 to be exact)  We've all missed him a lot.  We're super thankful for Facetime, but it's just not quite the same as having Daddy home to help with dinner, tubbies, and bedtime!  I think I may take a nice, long nap, upon his arrival :)

Thanks for reading!

Ahhh, winter.  Lovely, long, cold, winter. It poses a bit of a challenge to a mom with two small kids.  One of whom (Nate) won't keep his socks on let alone winter boots!   We've spent a whole lot of time indoors over the past few weeks, playing games, building train tracks, baking, crafting, Octonaut watching (our favorite cartoon of late!) and going a bit stir crazy.  I'm not one to complain about weather, in fact I really love winter, but enough is enough!  I think I'd head to the playground in shorts if the weatherman predicted a 40 degree day any time soon!

In other kid news, a miracle has happened in our home.  As many of you know, Ethan has always been a challenging sleeper.  From the moment he was born, he would only sleep if he was in my arms, and then, as he got older, would only fall asleep on me, and then even older (and with a funky living situation) in bed with me.  When we moved to our new house, the deal we struck was that he'd go to sleep in his room, and come into our room, and sleep on an air mattress on the floor in the middle of the night.  The plan worked smoothly.  He got the comfort in the middle of the night that he needed, we got the room in the bed that we needed.  And then suddenly, he stopped coming.  I know that for most moms this miracle happens at 6 months, or a year.  But with Ethan, it's taken four years, but he's sleeping through the night in his own bed!!  Miracle number 2... no pacifier.  I know, I know.  He should have been rid of that thing years ago.  But with no routine, and lots of upheaval and shifting, I was told to not rock the boat and to allow him to have something that made him feel secure (limited only to bedtime).  I guess all of these developments mean that Ethan is feeling secure enough to shed some of the things that he needed previously to make him feel comfortable.  I am so proud of him and sooooo relieved that there was no battle, and that these things happened so seamlessly.  Miracles, I tell ya!!

Nate is hilarious.  He is 22 months old- hard to believe his second birthday is right around the corner! He loves music and has become quite a dancer.  If he's not dancing, he's singing, or bobbing his head along to music. He and I have started attending a Music Together class one morning a week.  He loves it and I really enjoy watching him interact with the other kids.  He's using more and more legible words.  One of our favorites is, "pants!"  Mostly because he has learned to take off his pants and then runs around yelling, "pants! pants!"  It's sort of hilarious as long as we're not trying to leave the house.  He still can't "say" Ethan.  He sort of hums two syllables for his name.   He has also started doing "fist bumps" with everyone.  He'll bump and then, make a blow up sound.  He also says, "hug" and then when he gives you his squeeze, he sort of grunts in a effort to hug as hard as he can.  He does and says a lot of really cute things that are hard to describe in writing.  He is generally a happy, laid back kid.  He can entertain himself and I often find him playing independently with his trains, or reading a book.  Probably the result of being child #2.  He adores Ethan and they are starting to play together more away.  They race back and forth through the kitchen, with Nate saying, "Ready, go!!"  Fun stuff.

Thanks for reading!  Hope you are staying cozy and WARM!

Our new found passion- legos for big kids!
So much Christmas Cheer!  As you can see we made the most of this holiday season!  We squeezed in a whole lot and had tons of fun.  We were so happy that we had the chance to get back up to Maine for New Years Eve, and despite the frigid temps (and colds, and teething, and lack of routine, and sleep, and unusual meltdowns from our 4 year old!!!) we had a great time.  We watched the fireworks at Beans, swam in our hotel's pool, hung around Portland, and hit some of our favorite restaurants.  It was so nice to be back in our old stomping grounds.

In Nate news, he is now 22 months and is starting to use recognizable words more and more.  It's taken him awhile, but he's starting to put it all together.  It's very cute to hear him talk and as easy going as he is, he definitely knows what he does and does not like.  He's still super picky about food.  He'll eat yogurt, fruit, cereal, and Chipoltle quesadillas- and that's about it!  I'm hoping that with time and exposure, he'll broaden his palate, but if his big brother is any indication, willingness to try new things gets less and less!  Maybe Nate will surprise us!

We feel super fortunate that we have these amazing little boys and our resolution this year is to enjoy every single minute that we get with them!  As many of you know, it flies!

Happy New Year!
